After a successful career as a speech-language pathologist, Irene embraced a new creative journey as a mixed media artist. Drawing inspiration from life on the coast, Irene's work often features vibrant colors, coastal themes, and an element of surprise. Passionate about sustainability and storytelling, she incorporates found  objects into her art, giving new life to overlooked materials.  Irene’s pieces are a celebration of creativity,   discovery, and the unexpected, inviting viewers to explore the layers and details of each work.

After retiring, I moved to Oriental, North Carolina, intending
to spend my days sailing. Instead, I discovered that painting
offered something even richer: a daily source of joy, community,
and creative energy. I love to paint, and I’m especially energized
by working alongside other artists, where shared focus and
conversation deepen the experience.

Much of my work centers on harbor scenes and boats, reflecting
the rhythms of coastal life that now surround me. At the same
time, my landscapes are shaped by the expansive skies and open
spaces of Nebraska, where I spent most of my life. These influences
come together in paintings that emphasize atmosphere,
light, and mood.

My art is grounded in a commitment to continual growth,
exploration, and collaboration. Through my work, I aim to
convey a quiet sense of romance—moments of stillness
that invite reflection and connection.

I love working with glass! For thirty years I worked in the industrial glass industry. My focus is now on glass in artistic applications. My studio is next to my home on Broad Creek in Oriental, NC. The journey into traditional lampworking (using an oxygen and propane table top torch) started as a beginners class at a local art studio thirteen years ago. I continue to expand my skills by participating in workshops and tutorials with award winning glass artists. My pieces are inspired by the nature that surrounds me. All pieces are kiln annealed for strength. They are accented with silver, copper and gold findings and semiprecious stones. I am a member of the Pamlico Arts Council, Arts of the Pamlico and Carteret County Arts and Crafts Consortium.
My work can be seen at the Broad Strokes Gallery in Oriental, NC, The Village Craftsman, Ocracoke, NC, Potters Market, Alliance, NC and at Maritime Museum in Beaufort, NC. Art shows include: Art under the Oaks in Corolla, Ocrafolk, Old Front Porch Music Festival, Oriental, Boylan Heights Artwalk Raleigh, NC, Spring Daze, Cary, NC and Art for the Heart Morehead, NC.
Awards include First Place Glass 2015 2016 GFWC Raleigh, Third Place Fine Art 2019 Art Under the Oaks, Corolla, NC and third place jewelry 2021 and 2022 Art Under the Oaks, Corolla.

I am a scientist, organic gardener, gourmet cook, animal whisperer, fossil hunter and friend. My work is the intersection  of who I am, function and sculpture using hand building and wheel thrown techniques using wild clays of eastern NC and commercially available stoneware clays, stains and glaze. Inspirations, ideas and experiments come as I wander wooded paths, wade the beaches of the Neuse hunting for Pliestociene era fossils buried in that wild clay!

  1.  " If I am true to my imagery, it will be honest, as the first time I glimpsed or felt a thing. The challenge   is to leave the  essence with each stroke of the knife. It's the reason we put so much stock in the   images produced by   children. There is no editorializing, no second guessing, just the first true   thought or vision with no hint of   everything going on at the time. Wet in wet, paint. Stroke and leave   it. Looking and thinking, trying to prevent time   from taking its toll is a process I will always love. I   could not live without painting."
  2.   Her paintings have been featured in solo shows, galleries and juried shows both nationally and internationally.   Her work is in museums and in public, private, national and international collections. Publications, exhibits and   public works can be found on Paula's website at:

Marguerite Chadwick-Juner
Picture
Marguerite Chadwick-Juner is a life-long professional artist. She attended the High School of Art & Design in NYC and won a full scholarship to Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, also in NYC. Her work has been featured in many solo  and group exhibitions and is in private collections here and abroad.

Marguerite was born and raised on City Island, NY and moved to Oriental 9 years ago. Growing up in the nautical community of City Island has influenced her work and she is known for her maritime scenes. She painted mainly in watercolor until she developed a multi media technique using acrylics and oil pastels about 30 years ago which she believes is unique to her. Since that time, she has revisited oils and has pushed her comfort zone to develop a technique partly utilizing acrylic pouring to create a new body of work she calls her “Reef People.” She says he approach is new, fresh and unlike anything I have seen before.
She has gained several awards and national/international attention for her Reef People paintings within the past few years. Notable among them is the cover of the April 2021 issue of Artistonish, an internationally circulated arts magazine. Inclusion in the Cameron Art Museum’s “State of the Art/Art of the State” exhibition in Wilmington, NC. While there delivering her piece, “Reef Dance,” Marguerite met and had an in-depth conversation about her piece with the Curator of Arts in Oceania from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Dr. Maia Nuku. “It was a real thrill to have such genuine interest in my work from such a distinguished curator,”
Her painting, “Reef Music - The Violinist II,” was published in AcrylicWorks 9: The Best of Acrylics which is a special edition collaborative publication by Artist and American Artist magazines. She garnered one of 10 honorable mentions awarded in that competition. Well over 2,000 works of art were submitted by artists in the U.S and Canada, and only 90 were selected.
Marguerite was part of the Bronx Artist Documentary Project in which artists living and working in the Bronx were connected with noted Bronx photographers who documented their work and work spaces. The project culminated in a book titled The Bronx Artist Documentary Project and exhibitions of the work at the Bronx Museum of the Arts and several galleries.
Her work is also in 3 North Light books:
Splash 12: Celebrating Artistic Vision
Splash 13: Alternative Approaches
Splash Retrospective: 20 Years of Watercolor Excellence

Sea the world through the eyes of Elaine Hinchman’s art!

“I am a self-taught, award winning coastal artist living in Greenville, N.C . I create
unique acrylic paintings with heavy textures that add movement

which begins when the different levels of texture are applied.

                      Adding
texture gives the observer a feeling of movement in the waves and
wind. It evokes the feeling of sea spray lightly misting their face and sand
between their toes, making the viewer feel present on the

picturesque coast. My hope is that those who view my art will feel
the same calm and peace as I do when visiting the coast.”

“Art is not a mirror held up to reality

but a hammer with which to shape it.”

ARTIST STATEMENT
It is ironic that when I create, my effort is to find order within the chaos, to find
paces that open & unfold rather than constrict. Also, I see entropy all around
me. I see the breakdown of our perceptions, environments, societies, ecosystems…
happy thoughts. No matter how I begin an artwork, the piece ends up reflecting
that breakdown.

I currently live just east of Raleigh and   have spent most of my life vacationing   along the coastal area of North Carolina. I   love to capture moments of nature by   stopping time in my photography and in   my prints. My wife, Denise, and I have a   home in Merritt and are hoping to retire   there soon. We fell in love with the quiet     and peaceful surroundings of Oriental   and have been spending time there for   over 10 years.

Christine Provard

I come alive at the Water’s Edge. I have felt this since I was a small girl living near Lake Erie.

My love for the water also includes the wildlife which inhabits its shores, lighthouses, the rocky coastal areas of Maine, landscapes, boats, especially the working vessels for fishing and shrimping, and smaller wooden craft. I am drawn to structure which includes homes, barns, and historical sites.

I love the medium of watercolor and how its magic works with seascapes and landscapes but I also enjoy the medium of oil and cold wax, especially in abstracts.
Christine Provard is a well-known seascape artist residing in New Bern, North Carolina.  Her coastal landscapes and depictions of local wildlife reflect her love for her adopted coastal home of eastern North Carolina.  Christine retired from a career in nursing in Ohio in 2017 and relocated to New Bern with her husband Rick in 2018. Together they spend time exploring the Eastern coastline.

“I’ve always been happiest at the water’s edge.  I love painting there as I find my peace and joy in the connection with the water and shore ...
‘ where the sea meets soul’ sums up the heart of my art.’ ”

A member of the North Carolina Watercolor Society, and the North Carolina and Coastal Carolina Plein Air groups, she has exhibited her work throughout North Carolina and Ohio.  In addition to watercolor, she works with oil and mixed media.
Christine’s work is available at the Bank of the Arts and Ballantyne’s Art and Framing in New Bern, at the Broad Strokes Gallery in Oriental, at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center in Morehead City/Harker’s Island, and at the Community Council for the Arts in Kinston, NC.
Christine offers watercolor instruction and commissions.
